Galleries are boring. Odd paintings on the wall. Technical lighting attacking your eyes. A burning desire to eat. And to drink some tea. And your dog is waiting for you at home.

Not here, though. Not at Makhno Gallery.

The Makhno Gallery is a unique space that challenges traditional expectations of art galleries. Unlike other galleries that may seem boring or sterile, the Makhno Gallery invites visitors to lean on everything they see, touch the artworks and make noise. The gallery is conceived as a place where people can come and fully immerse themselves in art, and even live there if they want to.
There’s a flax sofa that can accommodate nearly 150 people. There’s a BOTAN armchair created specifically for silent reading, or for finally kissing him/her. So that nobody could see. So that nobody could hear. Make sure to lean not only on BOTAN but also on each other.
Laugh till it’s tickling in your throat. Sing till you shred the acoustics of the gallery (we already had Ukrainian modern singers daKooka and Maryna Krut singing here and we won’t stop). Bark, because you can’t leave your doggy home alone. And at night, designers and architects come to the gallery and dance. So dance! Make some noise!
Andrii, our event manager has lived here for 6 days. At first, Andrii was just staying in the gallery late and went home to sleep. But then he decided that sleeping at home is just a waste of time. So with a suitcase full of clothes, an iron, and a laptop, he became an accidental showpiece of the exhibition “Body. Beauty. Function”. The main task was to make taking shower in time to be ready to meet the first visitors. Now, when we ask Andriy about his home, he always specifies “You mean Pozniaky or the gallery?” The gallery is our home.

You sit on it, you wiggle – and you’re in your childhood again, and it seems like you hear your granny calling you for the dinner. And there’s a table. Big 3-meter in length wooden table perfect for perfect family breakfasts, for noisy tipsy friends meetings, for a Dj console, and for empty wine glasses.
But please don’t push the stand with the ceramics. At the big opening of the “Black black sea” exhibition, someone accidentally did it, and an expensive designer vase kissed the floor. After a short yet tense silence, Serhii Makhno’s wife whispered: “Oh my, you still have millions of them”. Everyone breathed out and continued petting the ceramics on the stands.

Lean. Touch. Make noise. Live. Feel
The gallery is a manifesto to young people, offering a space where people can fully experience and interact with art. A gallery is not just a space to display art, but a place where people can come to live, feel and take something home.
