THE CHALLENGE:
The UAE climate presents a harsh trial where scorching heat reaches up to 50°C and hot dust fills the air, dictating life’s rules. Here, every breath of wind and every patch of shade becomes a precious gift. Yet, one must still stand out amidst the dense urban development of residential complexes and hotels.
The best allies against the heat are wind and water. Architects have utilized these elements in this land since time immemorial. We have reimagined ancient technologies to create a futuristic building-sculpture featuring a grand pass-through arch, architectural portals, and an internal recreation area with a swimming pool. The residential complex is positioned to "catch" winds through its arch, creating passive air circulation that, combined with the pool's water, fills the entire building with coolness.
The LOVETS's (translated from Ukrainian as "one who catches") zoning embodies both aesthetics and functionality. The ground floor must remain accessible per local regulations, thus containing only shops, cafés, and other public facilities.
The residents' and guests' recreation area is located internally on the second floor — nearly 6 meters above ground. A pool with a floral island at its center offers relaxation under palm canopies growing through ceiling openings. The restaurant is elevated further and placed separately. Each apartment features its own balcony-terrace with living green partitions.
The LOVETS is a building-sculpture in a futuristic minimalist style where architecture, design, and art converge. Not just a residence but an architectural experience embodying the concept of "life as an aesthetic ritual."
Externally, The LOVETS invites multiple interpretations — each perspective reveals something unique. All architectural elements are diverse, making every resident's experience individual.
The UAE's surrounding landscape lacks green diversity. Thus, we made The LOVETS maximally verdant inside. Bonsai trees line the passageways, living green terrace partitions, palms, flowerbeds, and blossoms create a vibrant environment. The building's design features relief rounded forms reminiscent of desert dunes.
Since antiquity, when people discovered travertine's thermal insulation properties, it has aided architects in building homes that retain coolness. The variety of textures and colors provides creative freedom. We too have employed this local millennia-old travertine expertise, while modern micro-fiber concrete helps shape the building's futuristic curved forms.
The LOVETS residential complex embodies a minimalist yet profound and vibrant aesthetic. It represents MAKHNO Studio's philosophy of silent architecture — something you want to touch, and then remain to live within.
