The innovative BREATHABLE WALLS eco-panels by Serhii Makhno and his studio have won the Surface Design of the Year nomination at the prestigious Dezeen Awards.
The Dezeen Awards is an annual celebration of the world’s best architecture, interior design, design, and sustainability projects. Launched by Dezeen, the world’s most influential architecture and design website, this year’s awards are in their seventh year and have already become a benchmark of excellence, the most honored award for architects and designers around the world.
Out of more than 4,130 applications from 82 countries submitted to this year’s Dezeen Awards, MAKHNO Studio’s project eventually won gold as the most sustainable and innovative.
Judges comments: “This surface material brings a natural and breathable finish to a space, reviving old techniques in a contemporary and commercial way. This sustainable material brings warmth and tactility to a space.”
BREATHABLE WALLS are eco-panels made of live unfired clay with natural additives and fillers: flax, barley, sesame, linden, nettle, lemon balm, musk, coffee grounds, and wood shavings. Due to their unique composition, the panels have protective, recreational and supportive properties and effects on the human body. This innovation, inspired by centuries of experience, has a significant impact on the microclimate of the space, and thus on the quality of life.
