What do we know about Hong-Kong except for the facts that it is the world’s fourth-most densely populated region, It has the largest number of skyscrapers in the world and one of the highest life expectancies in the world? Well, there are too many “in the world” phrases for sure.

Polina Volkova, our interior designer, had a chance to visit Hong Kong. Polina fell in love with this city and now she wants to share with you 5 Hong Kong modern buildings that amazed her most.

1. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by Rocco Design Architects (China)

HKSAR Government Headquarters is located at the historical site of Tamar, a former naval dockyard. It integrates 3 principal facilities: the HKSAR Government Offices, the Chief Executive’s Office and the Legislative Council Complex. The design reflects a unifying composition, while each facility keeps its identity.

2. Hong Kong Institute of Design by CAAU (France)

This project is a perfect answer to the educational needs of the Institute of Design — it is environment-friendly, bold, ambitious and open to the publc.

In concrete, glass, and steel, its architecture invites one to reflect on the contrasting ideas and combinations: introversion and extroversion, modesty and exhibition, exclusivity and wide accessibility, classicism and experimentation.

3. Morpheus Hotel by Zaha Hadid Architects (UK)

At the ground level, the hotel is linked with a three-storey resort City of Dreams. Above it consists of 770 guest rooms and villas, even and meeting facilities, restaurants, a spa, and a rooftop pool. Informed by the fluid forms within China’s rich traditions of jade carving, the design combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with innovative engineering and formal cohesion.

4. The Murray hotel by Foster + Partners (UK)

Originally built in 1969, the building was previously used as government headquarters but now it hosts 336 luxury guest rooms, a rooftop bar, restaurants, and different event spaces. The design for the Murray creates a dialogue between the old and the new, giving the building a renewed purpose, with a unique character embedded within the facade of the building.

5. Tai Kwun Centre for Heritage and Art by Herzog & de Meuron (Switzerland)

Herzog & de Meuron transformed a former police station with a prison into Tai Kwun cultural center — the largest heritage conservation project in Hong Kong. It is still a totally new approach to architecture — an unusual thing to do because normally old buildings and entire neighborhoods are being removed and replaced by new ones.
